This is a great story about a little girl who has a close relationship with her grandfather. They explore and enjoy nature together and start to comprend and cope with death. In the end the little girl says thank you and good bye to her grandfather. This book made me cry as I thought of my own grandfather and my close relationship with him. Both of my boys were looking at me and asking why I was crying. Not much makes me cry, but this book was especially touching. This would be a great book to help kids cope and accept the dealth of a loved one, especially a grandfather.

I wasn’t planning on posting anything about kids books, but this one was so touching and I want to remember it for when we may need it in the future.

Banana Boats

I think this blog will quickly be a lot about food. That is our lives these days! A few weeks before Thanksgiving, last year, Brian was told that he was intolerant to corn, soy, dairy and gluten and he should also not be eating any grains or sugars. He has had a history of high cholesterol and triglycerides since before we got married. Since he is adopted we don’t know any of his family history so therefore don’t really know if this is genetic or not. Since we got married in 2005 we have eaten pretty healthy compared to mainstream Americans, but for him that hasn’t been enough. We have since changed our diet significantly and you will be able to enjoy some of the recipes we have worked so hard to modify for him to enjoy as well. The kids and I still eat dairy and grains, but I’m trying to make healthier choices there as well. Continue reading “Banana Boats”

Laundry Detergent

We have been making our own detergent for the last year or more and it has really worked well for us. I do use some spot remover on chocolate, dirt stains, blood or other such things from having two young boys, but any food marks, oil, yogurt, etc, comes out without a mark. My boys don’t wear much white so I can’t really say how it does with that. I do wear white, though and I feel like they come out just fine! Continue reading “Laundry Detergent”

Why We Get Fat

So why a book report… haven’t I gotten out of grade school by now? Didn’t I write enough that I should never want to ever write them again? Or not even look at one until I have to review the ones my kids have to write? Well, I do have a goal to read 24 books a year. It is just that… a goal. I’m not on target this year, but it is something I’d really like to do! In a perfect world I’ll be able to read one fiction and one non-fiction monthly. Continue reading “Why We Get Fat”

We Made Butter Today

Ordinarily we use mostly coconut oil or olive oil for our cooking and dressings respectively, but after doing some investigation of Nourishing Traditions and all the benefits we are missing out on, I decided I’d like to start adding more animal fats back into our diet. So now I don’t feel so bad about using the bacon grease again and bringing butter back! Continue reading “We Made Butter Today”
